Gecko Turner is a unique creator from southern Spain, born and bred in Extremadura, near Portugal, which gives him an original and tasteful latin nature. This well known local cat, who was responsible of quite a few acclaimed bands in the past such as “Perroflauta” or “The Reverendoes”, has delivered us a colorful soloist debut album entitled GUAPAPASEA!. We’re talking about an exquisit soulful laidback latin jazz grooves album you would love and enjoy from the first cut. An ace of it’s class!.
Aclaimed by critics as the best debut album this year in Spain with brilliant reviews: “Dazzeling debut” (El PAIS - main newspaper in Spain), “Glorious” (EL MUNDO - second newspaper), “the album of the year” (EFEEME magazine) just to mention a few. This smooth, fresh and honest record is currently topping the independent sales charts in our country (#2 at FNAC´s independent chart). Guapapasea is a musical journey blurring the boundaries in nu latin music.
Expect a nice blend of different styles. From soul music. to brazilian flavoured songs like the free and easy “Un Limón en La Cabeza”, afrobeats driven tracks like “ 45.000$ Dollars, Guapapasea!”, maybe flamenco-reagge like the astonishing Bob Marley’s revisited classic version of “Rainbow Country”, infected groovy latin rythms as “Did you black up today”, “Monka Mongas” where GECKO pays render to one of his idols Thelonious Monk, even the very first track is an original free adaptation of Bob Dylan’s “ Subterranean Homesick Blues”, or maybe straight forward reagge like this radio friendly track “Te Estás Equivocando”. For this recording Gecko has collaborated with great guest musicians from Spanish afrocuban jazz scene, such as Rubem Dantas (Paco de Lucía’s percussionist and regular contributor to Chick Corea´s gigs), Rodney Dássiff, great trumpet player Irapoam Freire...
Quantic or Watch TV also join to deliver head nodding remixes at the end. Instituto Mexicano del Sonido show up the party too with some spicy acidness to their remix where you can find the mexican gurú Camilo Lara at his best. . A record to celebrate life and good taste. A record equally for the discerning dancefloors and clever listeners.
