I just can't keep myself on focus no more it may be cause nowadays is all about texting, posting, fake news, clickbaits, busy thumb activity, didn't you want clarity, now? Twenty-twenty vision? I wish we got twenty-twenty vision... They keep on writing about heaven and hell heated argument, we fall under the spell we got bloggers, typing robots,

Laurel,

Ain't no fun preaching to the choir!! Ain't no fun preaching to the choir!! Ain't no fun preaching to the choir!! Ain't no fun preaching to the choir!!   No, ain't no fun preaching to the choir, I'm a-raise the stakes way, way higher, I'm a-get right into and I'm a-stay right into your intimacy...   Fifteen times a day I'll pop
up on that little screen that you love, I'm a-be your papa I'm a-be your momma never outta reach (everybody, now...) What am I gonna say? What am I gonna do? Well, I got a message, wanna send it through... I wanna send it through, wanna send it on, I'm a-get you singing a brand new song in a brand new beat that I will repeat about a million times 'til it'd be a hit, listen to me, now, doncha be no fool,
I'm a-show you right, I'm a put you in school...   Ain't no fun preaching to the choir, I'm a-spread the message way much wider, I'm a-push it forward then you'll keep it onwards for a minimal fee Jack of all trades, master of none, but I found my way up to number one, now I gotta admit it, it ain't no surprise  you require my advice...   What you wanna know, what you wanna try, I'm a-tell you about what you need to buy,  what you need to buy, what you need to be is the baddest copy of a brand new me, of a brand new me, I'm a brand new tool that can get you diving in whatever pool babe do it right, babe won't you please,  let me keep it on weed and Hennessy...   Ain't no fun preaching to the choir!! Ain't no fun preaching to the choir!! Ain't no fun preaching to the choir!! Ain't no fun preaching to the choir!!
5.
Oooh, baby,
you're trying much to hard. Oooh, baby,
we've never made it that far... I can try a riff
and play it rough,
but if the sound is beautiful, you know, that's cool enough, and I can even try
to play against the rules and dig a hole a mile deep to find a jewel... But how can I try without pleasure? How can I drive without leisure?   Baby, out there
in the countryside you feel so good and you don't know why, you gotta tell the birds and the dogs and the trees you gotta tell the cats and you gotta tell the bees now you want me to go with you climb a mountain range,  when I got vertigo, and you know it well. You say you want me to understand why you get so mad when I'm adamant... But how can I try without pleasure? How can I drive without leisure? Hi, can I try without pressure? How can I drive without leisure? With no measure, without leasure I can treasure. See I got the cabin fever, I can't stand it no more, I've never ever had that kind of feeling before. I had a phone call with Ed, I said “this I can't endure” he said “winter in Omaha, I'm a-sure that's the cure... You can try go sledding at Mahoney State Park, or you can go ice skating heading home right after dark” ok, but don't tell Mary, she'll blab it all over town... and when privacy's underrated, everything is complicated. How can I drive without pleasure? How can I drive without leisure? Hi, can I try without pressure? How can I drive without leisure? Without pleasure, without leisure I can treasure. Without leisure. without pleasure, I can treasure, we can treasure.

Little Dose 04:30
First you curse
and then you hurt.
Believe it or not,
some people would do any kind of thing for a little dose   Asking Moses, they weren't roses the whole way through. Some people would do any kind of thing for a piece of you. First you dream and then you cream, you're always on top.
Some people would do any kind of thing for a little love. Cheating carefree,
buy the referee, the media and all... Some people would do any kind of thing just to fix the score.   First you curse and then you hurt, now you talk about love.
Some people would do any kind of thing for a little dose.   Tellin' Moses,
it ain't roses
what they're gonna throw,
some people would do any kind of thing just to cut across. Living carefree each and every minute, you know some people would do any kind of thing from the get-go. First you dream and then you cream, and always on top. Some people would do any kind of thing... Some people would do any kind of thing... Some people would do... for a little love... Some people would do any kind of thing for a little dose.

But, really, haven't you seen her?   Who? The Queen of Papatosina Am I dead or alive?
Come around and check on me tonight Are we on,

Come and Try 03:05
Hey, mama wey, you look so fine you're giving me the eye and so I give you mine If you wanna break my coconut shell all you gotta do is, baby, be yourself   I say come and try... Come and try...   My sister told me I should be aware You're looking for a husband but I never care We're in the kitchen, you're cooking some food I get to salivate,
the smell is really good...   And you say “come and try...” “Come and try...”   They've always said that it's up to me, either get married or stay single and free, a little bit high, a little bit low,
I move it to the beat and let the good times roll...   I say come and try... Come and try...

Little boy found, little boy lost, down by the river, away from the coast, in a little row boat, diamond shaped, taking a nap and day dreaming away.   Open my eyes, what do I see? Riverboat man's staring at me, moving slowly his big strong hand, draining the water with a rusty can.   And I can tell he's into something good enough to tell me nothing. It doesn't matter what we do, he's always moaning river blues.   Looky here, boy, this is a bait, put it on the hook, now we gotta wait, keep it still, see what you do,
we might catch a black bass and a catfish, too...   And I can tell he's into something good enough to tell me nothing. Sweat is dripping from his head and clinks the guilded wooden leg.   I said “why is it so?”, he said “just because”. And he sang “Everybody knows somebody, everybody knows somebody from Badajoz”.   Tied with a rope, tied to a tree, riverboat dances in the middle of the stream. I'm holding the rod as good as I can, keeping an eye
on the riverboat man.   And I can tell he's into something good enough to tell me nothing. It doesn't matter what we do, he's always moaning river blues. Everybody knows somebody... Everybody knows somebody from Badajoz.

We're heading to the end of the world sick and tired won't you mercy me?   We're heading to the end of the world sick and tired
won't you mercy me?   It's gettin' hard to deny the facts, it's not a nightmare, we're living in a bad trip, as I was having breakfast today someone was pouring ketchup over fresh fruit   We're heading to the end of the world sick and tired won't you mercy me?   We're heading to the end of the world sick and tired won't you mercy me?   The background's watered down
and that presidente is a sad bitter clown. Now let me say with all due respect Turbocapitalism is ahead of the game, now...   We're heading to the end of the world sick and tired won't you mercy me?   We're heading to the end of the world sick and tired won't you mercy me?   Don't you give me no food for thought, we've been spoiled and wasted... Boy, you better do talk it good
or you might be arrested... Take a look at what goes around, there was some decency but now it can't be found, we ruin the planet, and we don't regret it, we're only worried about the money we're making   We're heading to the end of the world sick and tired won't you mercy me?

about

[Spanish below]

With his new album, Gecko Turner confirms that he is a standout artist in the global groove scene, a must for the outernational sounds aficionados.

Somebody From Badajoz is the fifth studio album in his much lauded discography and his first in seven years, eagerly anticipated by both his fans and himself: “this business of dedicating yourself to music and making songs... it’s a long game.”

With the release of his first two, remarkable, albums, Guapapasea! (2003) and Chandalismo Ilustrado (2006), Gecko started cultivating what one astute journalist defined as Afro-maduran soul—the “maduran” bit referencing Extremadura, a region in central-western Spain.

Badajoz, Gecko's birthplace, is the biggest city in the area, on the border with Portugal, by the Guadiana River. It is a place that oozes history, where there is constant movement at the border, and people’s character is friendly and open-minded with foreign habits.

Gecko’s Afro-maduran soul is built on Afro-American music and drenched in Brazilian, African, Latin American and Jamaican sounds. There are also echoes of a youth marked in equal parts by our man’s admiration for the Beatles and the flamenco that could be heard everywhere in Badajoz in the seventies. It makes for a singular sound and a musical language of its own—spicy, succulent, full of nuances, but with a very personal flavour.

The album opens with the Nigerian talking drums of Twenty-twenty Vision, (neo) soul in a magical falsetto, carried by a sumptuous orchestral arrangement with a cinematic flavour: “I’d been thinking about doing something called ‘Twenty-twenty Vision’ for some time, making a play on words with the vision we have of the world after the year 2020 and the medical expression, which, in ophthalmological terms, means ‘normal or complete vision.’ Beyond that particular song, I think that's the mood of the album: a look at society in the twenties of the 21st century and the feelings and demons it produces.”

It’s followed by De Balde, a very special song born from a posthumously discovered lyric by the great writer Carlos Lencero, a regular collaborator of Camarón, Pata Negra, and Remedios Amaya, and also from Badajoz. While conceived as a fandango, Gecko has moulded it into his sound in such a seamless way it now seems as if the words could only have been written to be embraced by the percussion, brass, and backing vocals heard on the album. It’s the only lyric on Somebody From Badajoz not written by Turner, still it sits rather comfortably with the rest, sharing the same emotivity and sensitivity, as well as the trademark humour and irony.

Other tracks see more protagonism for the rhythm. The beat-driven Ain’t No Fun Preachin’ to the Choir features Gecko’s vocals walking the thin line between singing and talking over a phenomenal afro-disco-funk-infused  trailblazer. In Am I Sad? it's impossible to not bob your head to the queen of Papatosina’s mongrel rhythm, as close to the banks of the Guadiana river as it is to the shores of the Mississippi. Qué Siesta Tan Buena, He Babeao Y To! is an ode to the snooze in true Afro-Maduran fashion. And in Come And Try, the Caribbean influence is evident—lovers’ rock that invites you to dance in good company.

In these songs, and throughout the album, for that matter, the musicians accompanying Gecko, who himself plays many of the instruments as well, shine brightly. All hailing from Extremadura, Javi Mojave (percussion), Álvaro Fdez ‘Dr. Robelto’ (bass), and Rafa Prieto (guitar) have been carrying him with delicate forcefulness since he started out as a solo artist. At the same time, the wonderful and essential voices of Deborah Ayo, Astrid Jones, Fani Ela Nsue, and Miriam Solís give the album a sunny variety of colours. And there are many more—a sensational group of musicians contributes dazzling harmonic bursts to many of the songs. The palette of sounds is very diverse and rich in textures and nuances, including, for example, the ngoni, bells, and various repurposed kitchen utensils.

The groove is always around, moving between the magical border sound of Everybody Knows Somebody From Badajoz and Little Dose, the silky soul of The Sibariteo Appreciation Society, and the exultant celebration of End Of The World (which surprisingly sees Gecko turning to the occasional use of autotune), a piece that could be used for the final credits of a Monty Python film and, in fact, closes the album.

Gecko Turner has done it again with Somebody From Badajoz, looking to the future without losing sight of the roots. In times of upheaval all over the globe, when people are looking for purity, he delivers a formidable piece of work: risky, optimistic in spite of everything, and with a decidedly bastard sound. Let's rejoice.

----------------------------
