about

English below

'Cortando Bajito’ is Gecko Turner’s new afro-latin banger and sounds like Stevie Wonder performing an Innervisions B-side in West Africa, with DFA records sewn into the tapestry. The 7-inch vinyl comes with a remix by LA’s Jungle Fire, who push the psychedelic Latin side of the tune with added soaring guitars and some echo chamber trickery. The song, taken from Turner's new compilation Soniquete: The Sensational Sound Of Gecko Turner is a certified floor filler, co-written and featuring percussion by Akin Elegbede Onasanya and keys from Chavi Ontoria, both of highly rated Nigerian Afrobeat outfit OGUN Afrobeat from Madrid.

“I started working on this groove with drummer Akin Onasanya and co-producer Borja Torres. When we had the drums and the bassline right, keyboard player Juan Carlos Ontoria did his thing. He used a Hammond B3 that happened to be in the studio and put several layers of clavinet and Minimoog too (there's no guitar at all). Then I thought of this phrase from some Cuban friends of mine, ‘Vienen cortando bajito...’, and that was it. It means something like ‘they're coming strong’.”

Track Name: Cortando Bajito
I don’t care for nothing
when I’m into something
Papa don’t you tell me what to do

I don’t mind you laughin’
or cryin’, even coughin’
but don’t you ever tell me what to do

Está de pinga, asere!

Mira como se mueve…

Sube al almendrón!

I’m gonna show you the funk!

Agarrate un poquito

Vienen cortando bajito

Esto está en candela!

Hasta lo baila mi abuela!!

I don’t care for nothing
when I’m into something
Papa don’t you tell me what to do

I don’t mind you laughin’
or cryin’, even coughin’
but don’t you ever tell me what to do
